Please
join us for our next meeting!
See
our Calendar
for the date...
On
the second Thursday of every month, the
North Jersey Orchid Society meets at the The
Hanover Manor, in East Hanover, New
Jersey. After dinner, we conduct our
program beginning with the guest speaker or
event for the evening and concluding with
the plant table. We encourage everyone
to bring in their blooming plants to share
with the society. Below are guidelines
for displaying your plants.
Plant
Table Criteria
At
each general meeting of the North Jersey
Orchid Society, members bring orchids in flower
to the plant table for show and for
peer group judging. Plants are entered by
divisions. Judging is open to all persons at
the meeting, each receiving one ballot. The
Society awards medals for plants as judged
at the meeting. The NJOS Gold Medal is
awarded to the plant that is Best in Show.
NJOS Silver and Gold Medals are awarded to
the other plants that are judged as first
place and second place winners.
Just
a reminder about how to enter your orchids
for the plant table:
Choose
a category:
|

|
Greenhouse
means you’ve grown the orchid
primarily in the greenhouse. |
 |
Lights
means that for at least part of the
year you grow your plants under
supplemental lighting. |
 |
Windowsill
means that you do neither of
the above but it is permissible for
the plants to summer outside. |
 |
Miniatures
can be grown under any conditions but
their foliage should be no more than 6”
high on a mature plant (this doesn’t
include spike height). |
 |
Fragrance
is an additional category that
requires a second slip (a purple one)
for entry so that a plant in the
fragrance category will also be
entered into one of the other four
categories as well. |
 |
Novice
is an new category added this
February. It's for newer growers
who want to share their blooming
plants. |
You
will find that the table is laid out from
left to right (usually) as Greenhouse,
Lights, Windowsill and Miniature. There will
be a large colored sheet where you fill out
the full name of the plant and your name
next to one of the numbers on the sheet.
Then pick up a blank slip of the same color
and fill in the plant name and put it with
the plant. Be sure to put the number of your
plant on the large sheet onto the small slip
as well.
Even
if you didn't personally bloom a plant, you
can still bring it in to share with
us. We'd love to enjoy their beauty
with you. Just mark them as do not
judge.
BE
SURE AND WRITE CLEARLY!

Opportunities |

We
need volunteers willing to organize
Early Bird workshops!
Our
group has a wonderful array of varied
growing experiences and we would love
to have you share them. Some topics we
would love to see presented in Early
Bird workshops are, Growing Under
Lights, Water Quality, Fertilizers -
what do all those numbers mean, Basic
repotting, Plant Doctor - help for
ailing plants, Orchid pests, Creative
Indoor Growing Spaces, and whatever
else you might be able to think of.
Let’s share our knowledge and make
the meeting a more informative
experience!
If
you would like to organize an Early
Bird Workshop please let us know. |
