Special Annual Events
The North Jersey Orchid
Society normally has the following two
special events each year.
Summer Auction and Picnic This
auction is usually held in early July and is
a major fund raising event for the NJOS.
It provides members with an opportunity to
acquire a variety of plants at reasonable
prices. The orchid plants are selected and
acquired by member volunteers and are
auction off during a morning and early
afternoon session. At lunchtime, a picnic
luncheon, with “gourmet” food items and
numerous deserts provided by NJOS members,
is served. The auction open to the public
and admission is free, but a nominal fee is
generally collected for the luncheon.
Annual Orchid Show The show
features orchid exhibits by regional orchid
societies and a select group of orchid
suppliers which are invited to participate.
Orchid plants, supplies and artwork are
available for sale. Judges from the
American Orchid Society award the best
orchids displayed in various categories.
The exhibitors thus include their best
plants in their displays in the hope of
winning an AOS Award. The dazzling displays
are a feast for the eyes. For the past few
years the Annual Orchid show has been held
in April at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum in
Morristown. However, the date may change in
2011, depending on the scheduling of other
orchid shows in the region. The show is
open to the public and admission is free.
In
addition to these special events, the North
Jersey Orchid Society devotes two of its
regularly scheduled monthly meeting to the
following special programs.
Holiday Party The party is the
major social event of the year for the NJOS
and is held at the Hanover Manor on the date
of the regular December meeting. A special
banquet meal is served by the Hanover Manor
and an array of deserts are supplied by
members. Each participant gets a small
orchid plant as a momento. A reasonable
(really a bargain) fee is charged for the
event.
Valentine's Day Orchid Auction
The auction is held on the date of the
February meeting and is a second major fund
raising event for the NJOS. As for the
Summer Auction, the orchid plants are
selected and acquired by member volunteers
and provide members with an opportunity to
acquire a variety of plants at reasonable
prices.
